FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About Our Site

Adding Your Blog
  • What do I need to add my blog to your site? Your site must publish an RSS or Atom feed. In most cases, you just need to give us the URL for your site, and the feed will be found automatically. If we are unable to obtain your feed, we’ll contact you promptly.
  • What types of feeds do you accept? We accept RSS 0.92, RSS 1.0, RSS 2.0 and Atom 1.0 feeds.
  • How do I add a blog? Send us a message via our contact form with your blog homepage and RSS/ATOM feed. We’ll do the rest.
  • Are there guidelines that you use to add or reject blogs? We are still working on these. For now, as long as it is a real blog and is Jewish or/and Israel related, we’ll add it. However, feeds like OnlySimchas are not included since they aren’t real blogs. We will also refuse to add any blogs that feature explicit content.

General

  • Why is your site called “JBlogSphere.Net”? The term was coined to describe Jewish and Israeli blogs (see WikiPedia). Unfortunatly, the real term is J-BlogoSphere, but when we registered the domain we forgot the “o”.
  • Do you have a button I can use for linking to your site? Of course it’s located at: http://www.jblogsphere.net/images/jblogsphere.png

Front Page

  • How often does the front page update? The front page is updating automatically every 20 minutes (top of the hour, 30 past the hour and 40 past the hour). We sometimes update stuff a bit more often, especially when doing changes, but don’t rely on it :)
  • How often does the list of sources update? As soon as it is changed.
  • Do you maintain archives? Not at this time.
  • Do you support podcasts? Yes! Any post that has a podcast attach will get a little icon just like this to the left of the post (the icon was made by Tim Madden and licensed under CC Attribution License). Clicking in the icon will take you straight to the audio file.
  • How do I find out when the last time the front page was updated? On the bottom of the page you will find the last time of update.
  • What timezone is used for the times and dates on the front page? Due to the technical restrictions on how the site was build, all times are in GMT. Plus, considering that the blogs are from all over the world, it’s only fair :)
  • Why do some post previews on the front page look cut off? We limit post previews to the first 1000 characters of every posts in order to avoid overloading our system. Sometimes the cut-off happens in weird places. A side benefit of this feature is that people have to visit the original blog site to see the full post, generating advertising and links for authors.
  • Why are the titles of my blog posts not showing up on the front page? You probably are using Blogger and did not enable the title feature. Take a look at this FAQ from Blogger.

Search Feature

  • Can I link to your search engine directly? Yes, the link is: http://www.google.com/coop/cse?cx=003801197544886128916%3A8trtznnxvsu
  • What sites are searched? All sites that are included in our site (you can find the list on the lower left part of our homepage)
  • What is your search feature? Our “Search J-blogs” feature lets you search all of the over 200 blogs included on our site in one click including all of old posts. This feature uses Google’s “Make Your Own Search Engine” feature.

Statistics

  • How often are the statistics measured? Once per day at 11:50 PM GMT
  • What do the different colored dots mean? The red dot indicates the lowest number, the green dot is the highest number, the blue dot is the latest number.
  • Do you also have statistics for individual blogs? Yes! But unfortunatly they aren’t ready yet to be posted. Watch our blog for updates.
  • What do the terms in quick stats panel mean? They are as follows:
      • “Total #” - total number of blogs in the system
      • “Posting #” - number of blogs posting daily
      • “Posts/Day” - total number of posts displayed in the site per day
      • “Average” - average number of posts/blog per day

Syndication and Feeds

  • How often are the feeds for the front page updated? At the same time as the front page (see above).
  • Why are the posts in the RSS feed are not as complete as the ones on the front page? Due to size limitations on RSS feeds.
  • What kinds of feeds do you provide? We make available four types of feeds:
    • An RSS feed of all posts from the front page
    • An RSS feed of last 25 headlines from the front page
    • An OPML list of all sources
    • An RSS feed for this blog
  • Where do I find the links for your feeds? On the front page, in the left sidebar.
  • How do I include a list of sources from your site on my blog/website? Use the JavaScript code found here.
  • How do I include headlines from your site on my blog/website? There are several ways to do that:
